Introduction to Region

Located on the west coast of Vancouver Island and rich in natural resources, Zeballos is nestled in the bottom of a river valley at the head of an inlet.
It is a small community with a population of about 250 people.

Named for a Spanish explorer, Lt. Ciriaco Cevallos, who sailed to this region with Captain Malaspina in 1791, Zeballos was originally established during the gold mining years (1924-1948).  Mining was the industrial focus for many years.  Eventually forestry and fishing became the main industries.  Tourism is rapidly growing.

Rich First Nations History

The Nuu-chah-nulth people are the First Nations of this area.  The Nuchatlaht Tribe has settled at the head of Espinosa Inlet approximately 25 minutes drive from the Village of Zeballos.  They live at the Oclucje Reserve.  The Ehattesaht Tribe is currently settled at the Ehatis Reserve located beside the Village of Zeballos.

Zeballos Life

From time to time there are Village events.  These are very worthwhile to go to and become a part of the community (rather than just the school community.)

The Village has a number of groups you can become involved in.  Some of these include: the Recreation Commission, the Rangers, and the Fish and Wildlife Group.

The Fire Department and the Ambulance Service are always looking for new members.

Enjoy the local scenery. Get out and explore the unique surroundings. Sometimes you have to force yourself to ‘get out.’  Your job will keep you busy, but don’t forget to take some time off to take care of yourself.
