Teacherage Housing Major steps have been taken since 1992 to improve housing for teachers. In 1992, a School District Joint Rental Accommodations Committee was set up between School District #84 and the VIWTU with the goal to cooperatively manage housing issues and projects. The Committee is made up of a representative from each community with teacherages (Tahsis, Zeballos, and Kyuquot), the VIWTU Housing Co-chair, a School Trustee, the Operations Supervisor (Co-Chair) and the Human Resources Administrator. A yearly budgetary/project meeting is held for planning purposes and for the discussion of issues. Major projects in the last few years included the addition of a duplex mobile home, the replacement of a rotting floor, and new flooring in many teacherages. Current housing is made up of one single wide trailer, a duplex trailer, three double wide trailers and one house. Rent for the teacherages range from $385 to $550.00 per month.
Most teacherages have two sources of heat (wood stove and oil furnace). While some choose to pay for the convenience of using the furnace, others choose to use their wood stoves. Potential tenants will be required to sign a lease agreement prior to tenancy. Also, if the tenant wishes to bring a pet, he/she must receive agreement from the Operations Supervisor prior to occupancy.
