RAY WATKINS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISCIPLINE PLAN
At Ray Watkins Elementary
School, we have a graduated discipline plan. Our staff may refer students to
the office if informal classroom discipline has not been successful or the
teacher feels the student behaviour has been repetitious or warrants being
handled by a school administrator.
STAGE ONE
This
involves an interview with the principal where the cause of the difficulty
is discussed with the student's.
The Principal may:
-
Set up a
plan to help the student deal with the problem
-
Talk to the
parents about the referral to the office
-
Refer the
student to our school counselor
-
Refer
student to community counseling services (community counselor requires a
signed release by a legal
parent or guardian prior to offering counseling services.)
STAGE TWO
Formal
warning letter to parents and class of some privileges at school. (On
Report). Students are accountable for their choices. If a student's
behaviour contravenes the school code of conduct and stage one has not been
successful or the actions of the student are harmful to themselves or other
students, the principal may put a student "On Report".
While "On Report", the times
the student can be at school are limited and some special privileges may be
lost. The term of the "On Report" depends upon the severity of the violation
and the attitude of the student.
The "On Report" status is
reviewed at the end of the time period stated and may be continued. If a
student is involved in a serious incident while "On Report", they may be
moved to the next level. A copy of this letter is held in the student's file.
STAGE THREE - SUSPENSION
If the two previous
stages have been unsuccessful or there have been repeated incidences, a
student may be suspended. This can be an in-school or out-of-school
suspension. Under the School Board guidelines this can be up to ten school
days. During a suspension, work will be provided to the student if the
parents request work from their teacher.
More serious
incidences are referred directly to the School Board of Trustees
